Sternula and BSCL Partner to Enhance Maritime Safety in Bangladesh

Sternula Signs MoU with BSCL

Boosting Maritime Safety with Satellite-Based AIS 2.0 Technology

Dhaka, April 29, 2025 – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Sternula and Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) to introduce satellite-based AIS 2.0 (VDES) technology in Bangladesh. The move is aimed at enhancing the safety, efficiency, and digitalization of the country’s maritime operations.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Imadur Rahman, Managing Director and CEO of BSCL, and Lars Moltsen, CEO of Sternula, at a formal ceremony. Senior representatives from both organizations attended the event, including Ali Mushtaq Butt, Head of the Trade Mission at the Embassy of Denmark in Bangladesh.

AIS 2.0, also known as VDES (VHF Data Exchange System), is the world’s first satellite-based technology designed specifically for maritime communication and tracking. Developed by Sternula, the system allows for real-time data exchange with vessels at sea, including ship identification, speed, position, and destination, while also enabling maritime digital services and connectivity between ships and ports.

According to the Department of Fisheries, Bangladesh has a fleet of around 50 000 vessels, including approximately 37 000 fishing trawlers, many of which operate up to 200 nautical miles offshore. Traditional surveillance methods have proven insufficient for such extensive coverage, making satellite-based tracking a vital solution.

Adoption of this advanced AIS 2.0 technology will support modernization of maritime operations, improve safety protocols, and contribute to innovation in port and fleet management. It is also expected to generate new economic opportunities in Bangladesh’s growing blue economy sector

Dr. Imadur Rahman highlighted the importance of maritime digitalization in line with national development goals, stating that, “If Bangladesh is to become a manufacturing hub, seaports must be made more modern and busy. AIS 2.0/VDES technology will play an important role in achieving that goal.”

Both Sternula and BSCL expressed their commitment to working closely to implement the technology and drive sustainable growth in Bangladesh’s maritime sector!
