Project Conclusion – MSI Over VDES

Advancing Maritime Safety Information

The project MSI over VDES, a collaboration between Sternula, Danphone, and Digital Lead, has been successfully concluded.

The project aimed to integrate VDES into existing Maritime Safety Information (MSI) systems to modernize the dissemination of critical information to vessels globally.

MSI is essential for conveying vital data such as weather alerts, navigational warnings, and potential hazards to ships. Enhanced efficiency and reliability of these broadcasts through VDES implementation can improve safety of life at sea (SOLAS).

VDES Development

Safe information exchange in the maritime industry is in great demand yet short supply. Greater geopolitical uncertainty, a growing cyber threat, and climate change create an increasingly complex maritime landscape.

MSI Over VDES explored how VDES can supplement existing systems such as NAVTEX and create a more efficient, scalable, and secure digital communication system.

Among other things, these objectives were accomplished:
  • A fully functional MSI gateway that manages logic and distribution
  • Conversion to the S-124 standard and integration into the MCP
  • End-to-end testing under realistic conditions
  • Documentation showing that terrestrial VDES is close to operational use
  • Insights into the potential of satellite-VDES – and the need for global capacity

A special thank you to our collaboration partners Danphone and DigitalLead, as well as Den Danske Maritime Fond , for supporting it. This project marks an important milestone in the development and standardisation of VDES technology, and we are thankful for the great companies that assist in the development of VDES.
