MMS Proxy Ship

The world's first
MMS Edge router

The Sternula MMS Proxy stands as the pioneer shipside MMS Edge router, encased in robust hardware designed according to the latest RTCM 13900.0 standard and IALA Guideline G1117.

The Sternula MMS Proxy Ship directs maritime communications to exchange data and messages between authorized maritime stakeholders (maritime administration, port management, ship crew, captains, pilots, personal equipment, services, etc.) in an efficient, reliable, and seamless manner.

The MMS Proxy Ship allows any means of communication system, e.g. VDES (VHF Data Exchange System), 4G, and other satellite communication systems, to transfer data directly to the ship bridge.

Maritime Messaging Service

Maritime Messaging Service (MMS), as defined in IALA guideline G1117, is a messaging component that allows authorized maritime stakeholders to send and receive messages in an efficient, reliable, and seamless manner within the Maritime Connectivity Platform (MCP). MMS solves problems of the current maritime wireless data communication system. The Sternula MMS Proxy Ship enables the transfer of digital “messages”, i.e., arbitrary digital data, organized in a predefined known way to be used by digital applications.

The Sternula MMS Proxy Ship provides a non-synchronous data exchange, that can be realized over varying, intermittent, and diverse digital connectivity. It also supports both secure IP-based transport through internet connectivity, VDE-TER, and VDE-SAT connections. As a result, it addresses the need for secure transportation of trusted services and private communication among maritime stakeholders who have  VDES or IP connectivity. Sternula MMS Proxy Ship software is compatible with 4G, AIS, VDES, and VSAT technology ensuring the exchange of secure maritime communication.

The Sternula MMS Proxy Ship functionality may be external to ship communication equipment in order to independently decide which communication means is the best type for the type of application, data, size, and priority under the current connectivity conditions on the ship and in the area.

By using the Sternula MMS Proxy Ship,  the data or message can be delivered faster and more confidential through a VDES satellite when ships are at sea, or via Sternula 4G Above Deck Unit when the ships are near shores, by using the mobile network.
