Trusted AIS Data

Mitigating spoofing with digital signatures

The Problem

It’s widely acknowledged that spoofing represents a significant global challenge.

The US Coast Guard characterizes spoofing activities within their maritime jurisdiction as malicious attacks. A similar description is often used in discussions with our customers around the world.

The impacts of falsified AIS data are substantial. Enemies can execute various actions with serious implications. These include covert ship-to-ship transfers, altering ship courses by creating false AIS targets to obstruct their path or deploying fake V-AtoNs (Virtual Aids to Navigation) near harbor entrances to deliberately ground ships.

The Solution

Sternula’s satellites are equipped with VDES capable payload. This opens up for two-way communication which is the biggest difference from today’s AIS technology.

Sternula supports implementing a reliable ship identification system by incorporating a request for a digital signature, ensuring that the information originates from a trusted source and remains secure.

NEXT STEPS

To secure the development of Trusted AIS, Sternula is looking for partners to collaborate in a funded development project where a solution for digital signatures can become a reality and spoofing can be mitigated.
